For the holidays I entered a competition that involved completing challenges for points. The reward was a gift card of up to $500. I entered the competition with the hope to win and use the money for lunch. Some of the challenges included visiting stores to scan QR codes, food pictures, and posting on social media.
The photo above is from one of the challenges. It is a new mural in downtown Newark, behind the public library. This has become my favorite mural in the City because of its uniqueness. Titled “Souvenir de la Voix” it represents the concept of sharing traditions from one generation to the next. As a first generation American I understand the concept of traditions. Yes, I was born in the mighty old USA but I grew up as Salvadoran as I possibly could. My parents taught me their traditions and introduced me to all sorts of Salvadoran food. Being Salvadoran and embracing that culture is very much a part of me and I could never let that go.
Oh, and one last thing. I did win the competition!
Wow! It definitely was not my intention to have Savir Blogs on the back burner. Real life definitely took over! So since I last posted I had a list of goals I wanted to accomplish, it’s only right that I update you on my process or lack thereof.
Savir Blogs: I updated my Newark collection. One of the pictures was used for my job’s Instagram page and it received good feedback. It also served as inspiration to other people so I thought that was cool. I still have beauty related content in mind, just not any hauls. I’m thinking maybe a makeup collection post or empty pan post.
Weight: I have not lost the 5 pounds that I wanted to lose. I did however improve my eating habits. I’ve been watching my portions and being mindful of how often I eat junk food. I find that I feel much better after meals. I haven’t started to work out and honestly I’m currently not motivated enough to begin.
Tattoos & Piercings: My goal was to have 3 new tattoos and a nose piercing by June. I accomplished this! I got 3 tattoos in one sitting. Some might think that’s a lot but the tattoos are on the smaller size of the spectrum. The pain was tolerable, even the one on my ankle. I also got my right nostril pierced. Although I did tear up when the needle went in, the pain was less than what I expected.
Vacation: In June I went to Las Vegas with my brother. It was extremely hot with over 100 degree weather but it was fun. Neither my brother or I are gamblers so we spent the majority of the time walking the strip, buying drinks, and shopping. I tried to plan a family trip to Houston but I was not prepared for all the accommodations I had to take into consideration! I haven’t decided when I’ll start planning that again.
Overall I’m not too disappointed with my goal update. I accomplished 2.5 out of the 4. Now that it’s the best time of the year, I think I’ll have time to focus on achieving the in progress goals.
In honor of National World Photography Day here is a picture of my hometown from 2 years ago.
This is the view of Newark from the outdoor terrace of one of the luxury apartment buildings in downtown. This is one of my favorite views of Newark because of the sword at Military Park. It shows “new” Newark with the addition of the Prudential building and “old” Newark with buildings like Hahne & Co. and the Military Park Building.
Newark has changed a lot over the past couple of years. A lot of the mom and pop stores have closed making the way for stores like Nike and Starbucks. It’s being gentrified slowly. The downside is that money speaks volume and lifelong Newark residents can’t afford the expensive standard of living.
Hey there! I’m Jessica from Newark, NJ. I am a first generation American, born to Salvadoran immigrants in the late 80s. I started “Savir Blogs” on a whim with no sense of direction. I needed something to do since COVID cancelled all of my plans for the rest of the year. As much as I would love to, I knew just eating and sleeping was not the way to go.
This blog is not tailored to a specific topic or aesthetic. It is me “directionless blogging” my shenanigans. The name Savir is a representation of me and I’m looking forward to sharing some of the things that bring me joy. I love sleeping, traveling, photography, spending time with my family, and of course my dog.
I hope that you join me on this new unknown adventure. I don’t know if anything will make sense but it’s going to be purely me.
